On Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, Castine will host its traditional day of fun, music and food. The traditional children’s costume parade kicks off the day, where families and friends dip deep into the creative well for costumes and costume-theme ideas. Fun and games on the common follow, with a tug-of-war, sack races, fire engine rides and a blueberry pie eating contest. Hot dogs, lemonade, watermelon and perhaps cotton candy are on hand to slake hunger and thirst. More sedate entertainment comes in the afternoon with an outdoor performance by the Town Band. Evening brings live music at the town dock followed by fireworks.
