Celebrate Bastille Day in Castine

by Anne Berleant

The French heritage and history of Castine will be honored in the third annual Bastille Day celebration on July 14 with cuisine, art, lectures, music, walking tours, a Flag Day golf tournament and music.

The day begins with a French toast breakfast at The Main Street Church and ends with a concert by the Bangor Symphony Brass Quartet on the town common. The signature event is a picnic en blanc, when white-covered tables will line a length of Court Street, with seating for 400, with stilt-walkers, a magician and live French folk music. White is the preferred attire, states a press release.

Plus, Dyce Head Lighthouse will be open for afternoon tours and the State of Maine, Maine Maritime Academy’s training vessel, will return from nearly two months at sea.

All events are free (with one exception), and everyone is welcome.

“We’re trying to make it a more regional event,” Town Manager James Goodson said.
