Calling all anglers: Slim’s Fishing Derby
by Faith DeAmbrose
This year the annual Slim’s Fishing Derby will be held on February 17 and 18 across all legal waters of Hancock County. Along with cash awards for largest fish, there will be a grand prize and numerous door prize drawings held throughout the event.
There is a grand prize, a $1000 cash prize sponsored by Fifield Lobster and Billings Diesel & Marine, along with cash prizes for first and second place in the following categories: Bass, Brown Trout, Salmon, Togue and Splake.
In the “Kids Category” a lifetime fishing license is the prize for the largest Perch or Pickerel (sponsored by the Island Employee Cooperative) and Inland Fish & Wildlife is sponsoring a cash prize for the smallest Togue from Beech Hill or Branch Lake.
Register online at slimsfishingderby.com, or purchase advance tickets at Beckett’s Bait in Orland. Tickets can also be purchased at the weigh station located at Toddy Pond, 1115 Acadia Highway in Orland, on Saturday, February 17, until 9 a.m. The weigh station will be open for the tournament from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
The weekend also coincides with a “free fishing weekend” in the state, which means that fishing licenses are not required.
All proceeds benefit the Jimmy Douglass Memorial Scholarship Fund.
