Deer Isle-Stonington High School names 2014 honor parts
Deer Isle-Stonington High School Principal Todd West has released the honor parts for the Class of 2014. In addition to valedictorian and salutatorian, there are three honor essayists this year.
Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, June 8, at the school.
Valedictorian Abigail Knowlton
Abigail is the daughter of Matthew and Rebekah Knowlton of Deer Isle. She is an outstanding student with an unbridled enthusiasm for learning. Abigail has been honored with the Phi Beta Kappa Award and the Bowdoin Book Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the high school’s peer support group and has participated in the Student Council and the Strategic Planning Committee. Softball is her passion; during her high school career she was a member of the 2011 Class D State Champion Softball Team and in 2013 was named the PVC Class D 1st Team Pitcher. She plans to continue her pitching career at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, where she will major in biology.
Salutatorian Megan Weed
Megan is the daughter of Mike and Eva Weed of Deer Isle. Along with her academic achievements, including the 2013 DAR US History award, Megan has shown remarkable citizenship and leadership through her participation in National Honor Society and the high school’s peer support group. She has been a tremendous asset to the basketball teams as a manager for four years. Megan plans to continue her education in the fall of 2014 at the University of Maine Honors College studying communication sciences and disorders.
1st Honor Essayist Douglas Heanssler
Douglas is the son of Brian and Melissa Heanssler of Deer Isle. He has a record of academic excellence and is a member of the National Honor Society. Douglas has participated in soccer, basketball and tennis during his high school career and was named a 2013-14 PVC Scholar Athlete this year. Over the course of his high school years, Douglas has spent many hours volunteering at the Reach Performing Arts Center, assisting with logistics at performances and helping to ensure that things ran as smoothly off the stage as they did on. Douglas plans to continue his education at Thomas College studying criminal justice.
2nd Honor Essayist Belle Merritt
Belle is the daughter of Marvin Lawrence III and Brenda Merritt of Deer Isle. She is an industrious scholar and a committed athlete. Belle was a member of the 2013 Class D State Championship Cheerleading Team and was a cheerleading captain for the 2013-14 season. She was named a 2013-14 PVC Scholar Athlete. During the fall of her senior year, Belle enjoyed working with Sally Foley at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School helping students learn math. Belle plans to study Engineering at the University of Maine, Orono.
3rd Honor Essayist Andrew Turner
Andrew is the son of Hilton and Rhonda Turner of Stonington. A distinguished scholar and citizen, Andrew has been a friendly, positive and helpful presence during his four years at Deer Isle-Stonington High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society and in 2014 was awarded the MPA Principal’s Award and the DAR Good Citizen Award, as well as being named a 2013-14 PVC Scholar Athlete. Andrew is an accomplished chess player with a career beginning in early elementary school. He has been a member of several championship teams and in 2010-11 he was the U1200 state champion. As an avid athlete, Andrew has played high school golf, soccer, basketball and tennis; he is currently the captain of the boys tennis team. Andrew plans to continue his education at the University of Maine College of Engineering studying chemical engineering.
