No drastic changes’ in Isle au Haut town meeting warrant

by Anne Berleant

Residents are called to town meeting on Monday, March 31, at the Revere Memorial Hall.

Voting begins at 8:30 a.m., with the choosing of moderator and elections, followed by school and town warrant articles.

“There are not any drastic changes from last year’s warrant to this year,” said First Selectman Landon DeWitt in a recent email.

A warrant article requesting $30,000 for the Island Store Association is similar to last year, as is an article to fund the Island’s share of maintaining the Colwell Ramp, although the issue raised in 2012 regarding access to the ramp around moorings has not been resolved, DeWitt said.

“The selectmen have determined that they are obligated to pay,” he said. “The moorings are still an issue as of now.”

The exact municipal budget number was not available as of press time.

“There’s still departments that haven’t put in requests,” said Town Clerk Sue MacDonald. “They’re trying to keep it as close as possible to last year.”

Last year, voters authorized a municipal budget of $255,004.

Other articles of interest are Article 40, “To see if the Town wants to change to a pay per bag system for solid waste disposal,” and Article 54, “To see if the Town Would like to have a Harbormaster and if so to vote his/ her compensation.”

School warrant articles propose a budget of $224,688, an increase of $30,229 or 15.5 percent. Behind the increase are transportation costs and tuition to Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, said Superintendent Mark Jenkins.

“There’s also a little more money in the budget for maintenance than in years past,” he said. “Everything else is typical.”

Town meeting starts at 8:30 a.m. Those attending from the mainland should catch the 7 a.m. mail boat from the Stonington dock. The return boat leaves Isle au Haut at 4 p.m.
