“Peas in a Pod” to make culinary debut
Student-run summer business takes shape

Five island high school students will spend their summer serving freshly prepared foods and learning the finer points of running a small business. Their mobile lunch stand, called Peas in a Pod, will be set up at three different locations throughout the week, and they will be available for light catering.
Under the direction of Kyra Alex and the Ready by 21 program at the high school, the students—Reid Bartlett, Kasi Billings, Logan Eaton, Morgan Shepard and Orly Vaughn—will be responsible for all components of a small restaurant business: planning the menu, purchasing ingredients, costing the food, cooking the food and balancing the checkbook. Licensing requirements will be done through Alex’s business, Lily’s House.
On Tuesdays, Peas in a Pod will be at the Deer Isle Congregational Church; on Wednesdays, it will be set up at the Deer Isle Farmers Market, and on Thursdays, it will be staged in Stonington at Penobscot East Resource Center. The mobile lunch stand will begin its three-location rotation on
The students will kick off their catering at the 75th anniversary celebration for the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge on Saturday, June 21.
The plan, according to the students, is to prepare sandwiches, wraps and salads using fresh, seasonal items. They will carry some beverages as well.
When asked what prompted the students to create such a venture, they all agreed that they wanted to continue to live on the island (barring any out of area college experience) in the future and felt owning a business was a way to make a living in the area. “We live in a culture of independent businesses,” said Billings, adding that Peas in a Pod is a good way to learn the skills necessary to be a business owner.
