Deer Isle-Stonington 4th of July celebration takes shape

by Kathleen Billings-Pezaris,

Stonington Town Manager

The 4th of July committee of Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber members and the Stonington Economic Development Committee has been working hard all winter to bring you our annual 4th of July festivities with some new twists this year!

Committee members include Suzy Shepard, Henry Borntraeger, Barrett Gray, Raelene Pert and me, Kathleen Bilings-Pezaris.

Deer Isle’s parade theme will be the 75th anniversary of our Bridge. So get your creative thoughts going on floats and parade entries and let’s make this a huge milestone to celebrate in 2014! Entries are already signing up! Contact our parade emcee Suzy Shepard, the chairman of the day’s event, at 367-5190 to enter. We are also looking for people who were at the original bridge dedication to contact Suzy to help us celebrate and attend the celebration.

New this year will be special Island 4th of July T-shirts and hats with a great logo designed by Frederica Marshall and printed by Maine Camp Outfitters. You can order ahead by contacting Suzy or purchase the day of the parade in Deer Isle.

Stonington will host the evening entertainment and food festivities on the Fish Pier with a popular country and rock band, Stesha Cano, playing from 6 to 9 p.m. We also have, extra special for the kids, Maine Magician Amazing Lou. Amazing Lou has entertained children for over 20 years professionally all over New England with magic tricks, illusions, and balloon animals. Food vendors offering fresh Stonington seafood will be available with fried fish and clams, crab rolls, and clam chowder this year. Other local organizations will be having fundraisers offering hot dogs, hamburgers, a cookie walk and other baked goods along with snow cones and ice cream, so come join the fun and enjoy the 4th of July evening in downtown Stonington!

We have a new fireworks vendor this year! The Chamber has hired Atlas Pyrotechnics since they have done such a tremendous job at Winterfest and other private events over Stonington Harbor. Atlas loves coming here and we have commissioned a longer fireworks display for this year’s 4th of July! Atlas has a huge array of colorful fireworks display for us this year with their computerized display show out over Stonington Harbor. Come enjoy the fun!
