Author to speak on the history of the Castine Golf Course
On Friday, August 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Castine Golf Club clubhouse on Battle Avenue, author Robert Sidorsky will speak on “Willie Park Jr: from Castine to the World Golf Hall of Fame.” Park was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame in 2013 as a member of the most recent class of inductees, along with Fred Couples and Colin Montgomerie, according to a news release.
Sidorsky will speak about the different facets of Park’s varied career, including as champion golfer (two-time winner of the British Open) and author of early, classic golf books, but mainly about his career as a golf course architect. Park was the first truly modern, professional, trans-Atlantic architect, and his landmark designs influenced later generations of golf course architects. The Castine Golf Club, which is one of the last courses he worked on, is part of a cultural and design heritage, and the club is working to preserve and promote the Park legacy by restoring the course to its original 1921 design.
