Deadline approaches for nomination papers for local seats

The deadline to file nomination papers for open seats is January 17.

For the school board, two three-year seats are up for election, those of Skip Greenlaw and Linda Nelson. Nelson has said she will not be running for reelection. Greenlaw has taken out papers. Papers for the school board positions are available from the superintendent’s office in the rear of the high school building.

In Stonington, there are two three-year selectmen seats available, currently held by Richard Larrabee Sr. and George Stevens. Both have taken out papers for reelection. Benjamin Barrows, Penobscot Bay Press general manager, has also taken out papers for selectman.

On the Stonington Sanitary District, there are two three-year terms available as well; one vacancy and the seat held by Ben Pitts. No papers have been taken out yet for either of those positions.

In Deer Isle, there is one three-year term available for second selectman, currently held by Twyla Weed. Weed has said she will not be taking out papers. Ronald B. Eaton of Sunshine Road has taken out papers for the position.

The treasurer/tax collector and town clerk are up for a one-year term. Currently, those positions are held by Lorraine Weed and Becky Knowlton. Weed and Knowlton have taken out papers for their current positions.

Paul Gray is the current road commissioner, though he has not yet taken out papers for another one-year term. Ken Eaton and Mark Cormier have both taken out papers for the position.
