Stay on houseboat Steely Ann headlines Brooklin Library auction

For those fascinated by tales of the houseboat Steely Ann, launched last fall by Brooklin Boatyard, now’s their chance to live the dream. A highlight of this year’s Love Your Library silent auction is a two-night stay aboard Steely Ann, docked at Belfast Harbor, according to a news release from Friend Memorial Library.

The auction, which benefits Brooklin’s Friend Memorial Public Library, will offer more than 160 items ranging from the practical to the delightfully inventive. Auction treasures will be up for bid February 1-14 in the library and online.

All items will be on view at the library, with half for silent bidding on site and half for bidding online. The auction website will be open for browsing before the bidding begins.

In addition to the silent auction, the library will celebrate the season by creating a hand-made valentine for every donation of $5, honoring a person or organization designated by the donor. The valentines will be on display in the library throughout February.

The auction features goods and services donated by library supporters in Brooklin and beyond. They include a cruise for six on the gaff-headed sloop Vela, designer jewelry, dinner at Aragosta, and the annual tour of “Charlotte’s Web” author E.B. White’s former home.

Jean Porter will offer lessons in lace knitting. Greg Philips again will offer his award- winning BBQ pulled pork. Bidders will vie for lobsters, maple syrup, a complete car detailing, Amtrak tickets, and produce and meat from local growers. One lucky bidder will win a take-home Valentine’s dinner for two, cooked by local chef Diane Bianco.

“I’ve never known a community to be so supportive of its library,” Library Director Stephanie Atwater said. “There’s something for everyone: children, gourmets, art lovers, readers, crafters, anyone wanting to benefit Friend Memorial Library while buying something necessary or special.”

Beginning its 102nd year of serving the community, the library today has an annual circulation of more than 18,000 in a town of 800 residents. Last year’s Love Your Library auction funded nearly 15 percent of the library’s annual budget.
