Nomination papers due in Island towns January 17

by Jessica Brophy

Nomination papers for open positions are due back by January 17 in both island towns.

In Deer Isle, there is one three-year term available for second selectman, currently held by Twyla Weed. Weed has said she will not be taking out papers (see related story on this page). As of press time, Ronald B. Eaton of Sunshine Road has taken out papers for the position.

The treasurer/tax collector and town clerk are up for a one-year term. Currently, those positions are held by Lorraine Weed and Becky Knowlton. Weed and Knowlton have taken out papers for their current positions.

Paul Gray is the current road commissioner, though he has not yet taken out papers for another one-year term. Ken Eaton and Mark Cormier have both taken out papers for the position.

In Stonington, there are two three-year selectmen seats available, the seats of Richard Larrabee Sr. and George Stevens. On the Stonington Sanitary District, there will be two three-year terms as well; one vacancy and the seat held by Ben Pitts.

No papers have been taken out yet in Stonington for any position.
