Ready by 21 launches “parent voices” blog

by Jessica Brophy

Ready by 21, a nonprofit organization supporting education efforts to prepare Island students for life, college and work, has launched a new blog aimed at parents of students.

“We’re trying to be responsive to individual needs of all parents,” said Kyra Alex of Ready by 21. The blog can be found at parentvoices.wordpress.com.

The blog offers information and resources about high school and college academics, family health and wellbeing, employment, finances and more. The topics are wide-ranging, said Alex.

Ready by 21 held a focus group with parents of middle school students to ask what kinds of information and resources they would like to have available. Several parents, including one who is also a teacher, discussed what would be useful to know going into the high school years.

The blog serves as a central clearinghouse for resources, articles and ideas. There is a lot of information out there, said Alex, but not all of it is easy to find.

“This way parents can look at this at their leisure, ask questions and more,” said Alex. Parents or other interested parties can post questions and engage in discussion on each blog post as well.

The blog was designed by Island Institute Island Fellow Ian Watkins, who is also posting the information on the blog.
