MMA Convocation to be held September 1
Maine Maritime Academy will host its fifth annual Convocation on Monday, September 1, at 2 p.m. in the Alexander Field House. Members of the Castine community are invited and encouraged to attend, according to a news release from the academy.
“At Convocation, we focus on the role of community in fostering learning,” said MMA President William Brennan. “We ask our faculty, staff, and friends to affirm their support of our students. We also invite the community to join this gathering as a reminder that they truly make an impact on our students.”
Recognizing the roles that faculty and staff play in creating a sound educational environment, the college has invited all members of the MMA campus community to participate in a unified procession. Campus and community leaders, including MMA Board of Trustees Chairman Capt. Robert Peacock II, Castine Board of Selectmen Chairman David Unger, and Alumni Association President Jim Proulx will speak at the ceremony and offer their welcome.
The Convocation ceremony was introduced in 2010, establishing a new tradition to welcome all incoming students, as well as second-, third-, and fourth-year students, in a formal ceremony that marks the beginning of the college experience with the same enthusiasm and celebration as commencement exercises.
