Eaton named Deer Isle Road Commissioner in run-off election
by Faith DeAmbrose
After two duly called elections, Deer Isle can now officially swear in an elected road commissioner. The job goes to Ken Eaton, who beat his opponent by 85 votes during a run-off election held April 22.
A total of 423 votes were cast, 98 of them by absentee ballot. Eaton received 254 votes and challenger Mark Cormier 169 votes.
At March’s town meeting, Mark Cormier was certified as the winner by the moderator with a 207-206 vote tally. The following day Eaton initiated a recount. The recount, conducted three days after, ended in a tie, prompting a run-off election.
Former Road Commissioner Paul Gray was sworn in as acting road commissioner until the results of the run-off were certified.
Eaton was sworn in Wednesday, April 23, according to town clerk Rebekah Knowlton.
