October workshops to address poverty in eastern Maine
Dr. Donna Beegle, nationally honored poverty expert, will be the keynote speaker and workshop leader for Healthy Peninsula’s third annual Early Childhood Conference to be held on Saturday, October 19, at the Blue Hill Consolidated School.
“We have been working with the University of Maine in Orono, Helping Hands with Heart, and the Maine Highlands Senior Center in Dover-Foxcroft to coordinate a broad effort of education around poverty by presenting Dr. Beegle’s workshops in the eastern Maine region in October,” Healthy Peninsula director Denise Black said in a press release.
The workshops are scheduled over three days: Thursday, October 17, at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft, Friday, October 18, at UMO, Minsky Recital Hall, and Saturday, October 19, at the Blue Hill Consolidated School.
General goals for the Blue Hill Conference, titled “The Poverty Hurdle: In Pursuit of Goals and Dreams for Every Family, Every Child,” are to increase community awareness of common biases and misconceptions of poverty; to assure that every child is ready to learn and succeed to his highest potential; to empower communities to build circles of support for families and children; and to facilitate change through education and action.
