‘Guitar Queen’ returns to Stonington Opera House
Acoustic guitar virtuoso Del Rey will appear in a concert and ukulele workshop at the Stonington Opera House Saturday, October 19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
Opera House Arts welcomes back the renowned “Guitar Queen,” Seattle’s Del Rey, for a special solo concert Saturday, October 19, at 7 p.m. Rey also will teach a ukulele workshop, Blue Uke, Sunday, October 20, at 1 p.m. Rey has appeared previously to popular acclaim at the Opera House as part of the summer Guitar Masters concerts. The University of Maine at Machias Ukulele Club, under the direction of Gene Nichols, will open.
Audiences love Del Rey’s unique combination of country blues, stride piano, classic jazz, ragtime, and hillbilly boogie, all played through the sensibility of a self taught trailer-park esthete, OHA said in a news release. She started playing classical guitar when she was 4. As a teenager, she met bluesman Sam Chatmon who inspired her to become a blues queen.
Bring ukuleles to the Opera House Sunday afternoon for the Blue Uke workshop, at which Del Rey will teach participants to play songs from 1920s guitar greats like Charlie Jordan and Barbecue Bob. The workshop is limited to the first 20 participants,.
Tickets are available in advance at operahousearts.org, or by calling the Stonington Opera House, 367-2788.
