MMA football wraps up
Mariners start strong, but fall to Curry
The Mariners battled hard against Curry at home on November 16, pulling to a 22-7 lead early in the second quarter, but fell 54-38 in the season-ender.
Maine Maritime opened up with a 22-7 lead in the second quarter, before Curry scored five unanswered touchdowns to spark a 54-38 win in a New England Football Conference game on November 16. The Mariners ended the 2013 campaign at 1-6 NEFC, 1-8 overall.
Billy Wetherbee finished the day with a game-high 206 yards on 30 carries with a touchdown for the Mariners. The senior surpassed Matt Rende ’12 for seventh on the school’s all-time career rushing yards list. Wetherbee finished his career with 2,634 yards.
Joshua Doolan turned in 126 yards and Michael Fahey added 74 for Maine Maritime.
Maine Maritime honored seniors Gavin Cote, Drew Daveluy, Chase Hutchinson, Abe Kilborn, Ryan O’Neal, Paul Stambach, Shane Sullivan, Frank True and Billy Wetherbee, all of whom played in their final collegiate game.
Womens basketball 2-1 at season start
Maine Maritime womens basketball team overcame a 10-point first half with 28 points in the second, but it wasn’t enough as Mount Holyoke held on for a 51-38 win in the Mariner Pepsi Challenge Championship game November 16. This followed a 56-50 Mariner win over Simmons on November 15.
Jillian Perron and Hannah Lyons were named to the All-Tournament for Maine Maritime.
Cheyenne Malloy came off the bench to lead the Mariners with nine points. The freshman was 3 of 9 from behind the arc and pulled down five boards. Kari Jones added eight points and five rebounds and Ashley Shine had a team-high six rebounds.
Maine Maritime turned it around with a win at home against Maine-Machias on November 19, where junior Bekah Campbell tied a career-high with 20 points to lead the Mariners to a 92-41 final score in a non-conference game. The Mariners are now 2-1.
Mens basketball falls, then falls
Maine Maritime mens basketball team dropped a 90-53 decision to Fisher in the consolation game of the Wheaton College Tip-Off Tournament on November 16. The Mariners are now 0-2, after a 65-57 loss to Wheaton on November 15.
Tyler Gilson came off the bench to lead Maine Maritime against Fisher with 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Kyle Bocuher added points and six rebounds and Garrett Libby, Tyler Chiasson and Dylan Stevens each posted six points for the Mariners.
Tyler Shular scored a game-high 25 points for Fisher and Chris Green added 16.
The Mariners played at Maine-Presque Isle on November 20; scores were not available by press time.
Cross Country team competes at NCAA regionals
Maine Maritime’s mens cross country team finished 28th out of 50 teams at the NCAA Division III Regionals November 16 at Southern Maine.
Maine Maritime senior Matt Methot finished the 8K course in 25:49.51 to place 44th in a field of 366 runners. Connecticut College senior Michael LeDuc won the event in 24:21.03.
Vijay Kataria placed 159th in 27:44.88, George Morrison finished in 28:40.78 and Wyatt LaPage crossed in 29:02.85 for Maine Maritime. Cameron Roy finished in 29:35.65 to round out the Mariners scoring. Chase Reidelbach and Victor Skorapa also competed for Maine Maritime.

Saturday, November 23: Women host St. Jospeh’s; tip off is 1 p.m.
