Mercury Races open to the community

Mercury Races at the Castine Yacht Club begin Tuesday, July 16, according to a news release.

Mercury Racing is an adult sailing program that is made available by the use of Maine Maritime Academy’s Mercury sailboats. Racing day is Tuesday weekly, and it is open to all. Beginners are welcome and will be placed in a boat with an experienced sailor.

Interested sailors gather at the CYC clubhouse on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. for sign up. Participants need to bring their own flotation devices. The event is scheduled to last about three hours and is followed by a gathering at the clubhouse.

MMA’S boats are moored across the water from Castine, and MMA transports the sailors from the CYC dock to the boats and back. The Racing Committee boat and staff are provided by CYC. Instruction will be given about safety and sailing rules. For information, call Judy Fitzsimmons at (617) 320-1366.
