Penobscot Narrows Bridge inspection expected to cause delays
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which carries Route 1 over the Penobscot River, will undergo an inspection and bridge survey beginning on Thursday, December 5, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Transportation.
During the work, there will be intermittent road closures and lane shifts during the daytime and overnight hours. Intermittent road closures of up to 45 minutes will occur from 10 p.m. Thursday, December 5, until 4 a.m. Friday, December 6.
During the inspection, there will be alternating two-way traffic between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Thursday, December 5, to Tuesday, December 10.
Motorists should allow extra time when planning on traveling this bridge during these hours, continued the press release.
The inspection will include gaining access to the bottom of the concrete structure, the supporting cables and the supporting pylons.
The survey will be performed to ensure the bridge is maintaining its desired design geometry.
