The girls softball team won its opener with Searsport 17-5. We benefited from many walks and hit batters to score 12 runs in the first inning and cruised to the win from there. Abby Knowlton looked very good in her first outing, giving up five hits with only four walks and five strikeouts. The defense was good for the first game of the season.

Shiann Closson led our offense with two doubles and five RBIs, Amber Jones had two singles with three RBIs, Julie Hutchins had two singles with an RBI as well as two walks, and Chelsea Brown had a single with two RBIs.

The girls beat Bangor Christian 8-7 in a drama-filled ending. We had a comfortable 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh when we came a bit unglued and lost our composure with three errors. Bangor Christian was able to score three runs and had the bases loaded with two outs. Julie Hutchins made a difficult catch of a soft liner, colliding with Michala Brown on the play and somehow hung onto the ball to end the game. If she drops the ball, BC wins.

I think they call that the skin of your teeth, but it ends up a win. Abby Knowlton gave another good pitching performance giving up seven hits, with only three walks and eight strikeouts. We hit the ball well led by Julie Hutchins with a triple and three singles, Shiann Closson a double and two singles with an RBI, Amber Jones two singles and an RBI, Logan Eaton a single with two RBIs, Allyson Eaton a single with an RBI, and Whitney Brown and Holli Boyce each with a single.

The boys lost their first game to Searsport 3-1. We were hurt by a few errors that allowed Searsport runners to take extra bases in the sixth inning when all the runs were scored. Sam Grindle pitched the first three innings, Connor Morey the next three, and Hayden Ciomei pitched the seventh. Our pitching was good, but when Searsport did get a few hits, they were opportunistic on the bases and scored the few runs they needed to win.

We were not aggressive enough at the plate and put the ball high in the air when we did hit. David McManus had two singles and our only RBI, and Sam Grindle, Connor Morey and Tyler Robbins each had a single.

The boys lost an error-filled game to Bangor Christian 6-5. Neither team had a good day with defense. Sam Grindle pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up four hits with four strikeouts. Connor Morey pitched the last three innings, giving up two hits with two walks and six strikeouts, and the two unearned runs.

We trailed 4-1 after three innings when we managed hits in the fifth inning by Sam Grindle, Connor Morey and Hayden Ciomei with an error to take the lead 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh, BC started off with a hit and a walk, and it all went downhill from there. Three errors led to the two runs BC needed to win.

This was a tough loss on a cold windy day where neither team played well. Beside the three hits already mentioned, Nick Eaton had a single and Connor Morey was credited with an RBI.

The girls have two wins under their belt but are still working on being comfortable in their new positions. We have won but have not dominated teams. Abby Knowlton has performed well in her two starts, so we are looking good as we head into the season.

The boys start off with two close losses to good teams. Our inexperience and lack of playing so early in the spring was to be expected, but it is frustrating to have a game slip through our fingers. Coach Darren Eaton expected the season to be like this. However we need to find our bats and settle down. Hopefully we will heat up with the weather soon.
