Peter Clapp to retire

After 50 years on the job, Blue Hill Garage owner Peter Clapp is stepping down and turning the reins over to longtime employee Donnie Perkins.

“Well, I guess it’s time for a change, a big one for me, but not so much for Blue Hill Garage,” Clapp said in a letter he distributed to his customers and vendors.

According to the letter, Blue Hill Garage has held a prominent place in downtown Blue Hill since the early 1920s and has been in Clapp’s family since 1941. Clapp has worked at the garage since 1963 and has owned it since 1975. Perkins, who will become the new owner of Blue Hill Garage as of May 1, has worked there for more than 35 years.

“It’s time for a change—new blood to invigorate a new broom to clean out dusty corners,” Clapp said in his letter. “Donnie will make some changes doing the things a new broom is supposed to do. I urge you to stop by, or call, and talk to Donnie. Show him your support in this big step, and let him explain his thoughts about those changes.”

Clapp also credited the support of “excellent vendors” and “loyal customers” for the garage’s many years of success.
