GSA Boys hold steady, girls looking for a win
by Anne Berleant
The Eagles soccer teams struggled in game play this week, but post-season play looks good for the boys and still within reach for the girls.
The boys started with a strong 5-2 win over Sumner on October 3, tied 0-0 against Orono on October 5 and posted a disappointing 5-0 loss against Ellsworth on October 8.
A better balanced team and a deep bench, both strengths Coach Dan Kane mentioned early in the season, have helped the GSA boys hold fast to sixth place in the HealPoint Standings, with two regular season games scheduled before the post-season starts on October 15. The boys look good at least for the regionals, if not the quarterfinals or beyond.
The girls are 0-1-2 in match play for the week and could not score a goal against Bucksport or Orono but tied 1-1 against Sumner on October 2. With wins against Sumner, Deer Isle-Stonington and Searsport earlier in the season, the girls have moved up one place, to 12th, in the HealPoint Standings. If they can play strong in the next three games, they can still qualify for the regional prelims, although two of those games, against fifth place Dexter and Class B Ellsworth, may prove difficult.
