Stonington 6 set for July Fourth
The annual Stonington 6, will be held for the 27th year on Wednesday, July 4. This year’s race is dedicated to Nat Barrows, founding president of the Island Community Center.
Participants can sign up for three categories: Powell 10K (6.2 miles), Fun Run (1.4 miles) and a Walker Class. For the 10K, there will be five age divisions of runners for men and women: Under 21, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and older. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Island Community Center in Stonington. Race fee is $15 per person. Walkers begin at 7:30 a.m. 10K and Fun Run racers begin at 8 a.m. The starting line is at the Community Center, where there are rest rooms and changing areas. The course will follow Cemetery Road, down Route 15, through Main Street. From Main Street, the course continues through West Main, out Sand Beach Road to Burnt Cove Market, along Sunset Avenue, back along Cemetery Road, Route 15 and into town. The finish is on Atlantic Avenue.
Sponsors this year are Penobscot Bay Press, Ron’s Service and Auto Sales, Maine Camp Outfitters, Island Approaches, Whale’s Rib Tavern, JT Rosborough, Island Accommodations, The Pilgrim’s Inn and The Island Agency Real Estate. Prizes will be awarded for top male and female finishers in each age division of the 10K, to the first Island resident to finish and to the oldest and youngest finishers in the 10K and Fun Run.
