Much of the list of the GSA tennis teams accomplishments this season could be followed by the word “again.”
The boys team won the Class C regional championships—again. This is the ninth time they’ve brought home the trophy in 11 years, this time shutting out the Madawaska Owls 5-0.
The girls team also brought home a Class C regional win—again, repeating their 2011 performance. This year they had the pleasure of closing out the season’s top-ranked team, the Van Buren Crusaders, 5-0, with top singles player Sotherd Steer, of Castine, winning her match over Haley Lizoitte 6-4, 6-0.
Steer was also named the girls top singles player and Penobscot Valley Conference Class C Player of the Year. As one of the top 48 Maine singles players, she competed in the state singles championships.
Ted Lameyer, of Castine, partnered with Nick Dillon in the second doubles team to open the boys play, rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 win. Second singles player Jasper Adam, of Castine, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jake Goudrau. Adam also qualified for the state singles tournament.
Both teams fell to the Wayneflete Flyers in the states, but “put a scare in Wayneflete early on,” said boys coach Larry Gray, adding that it was “great year for both GSA tennis teams.”
