The boys’ baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Bangor Christian 2-1 in our quarterfinal match up. It was a tight, well played game all the way and I can’t imagine a harder way to lose a game. Sam Grindle pitched a superb game giving up six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Unfortunately, BC’s pitcher also pitched a gem.

We scored in the first inning when Sam Grindle singled, stole second, advanced on a throw, and then came home on a fielder’s choice ground-out by Connor Morey.

That was all the scoring until the bottom of the seventh, when Sam Grindle walked the first two batters. Two ground-outs later, he had two strikes on the number eight batter who was able to hit a ball off Grindle’s glove, just getting out of the infield to score the tying run. Again with the next hitter, Grindle had two strikes and the batter was able to hit the ball out of the infield to score the wining run.

There were many what-ifs in this game, but the baseball gods were not with us in this one. We just didn’t hit well or when we needed to. Credit the BC pitcher as the reason for most of that. Sam Grindle had two singles, and Nick Trundy and Tyler Robbins each had a single.

This was a tough loss to a team that we knew and also they knew us. Better to have the game we could have had won slip away then get trounced, but it hurts just the same. At the end, it was like holding a handful of sand and feeling it slip through our fingers and not be able to stop it. Small consolation for a game well played.

In the previous game, we played a great game to beat Katahdin 11-1 in six innings. Connor Morey pitched almost perfectly, giving up one unearned run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks. He helped his own cause with three singles and four RBIs, Joe Condon had a double and a single with an RBI, Tyler Robbins had two singles with an RBI, Nick Trundy had a two-RBI single, Hayden Ciomei had a double, and Sam Grindle, Jake Starkey, and Nathan Davis each had a single.

After a double and a walk, Nick Trundy drove home two runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Joe Condon drove in a run and Connor Morey drove in two more to give us a 5-0 lead. Katahdin scored a run in the sixth, but the floodgates opened and we scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to give us the 10-run lead to end the game. If we could only have carried some of that offense into the BC game, we’d be smiling now.
