Mariners drop lacrosse season opener to Huskies, 18-2

Maine Maritime Academy’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to the University of Southern Maine 18-2 in a non-conference match-up on March 19.
Sophomores Tom Houl and Alex Hermes scored for the Mariners. Junior Brian Corain had an assist.
Junior Erik Milles started in the goal for MMA, stopping eight shots over the first 37 minutes. Then freshman Gavin Cote came on to make five saves.
The Mariners return to Portland next Saturday to host Massachusetts Maritime Academy at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
Mariners split double header with UMaine Presque Isle
In women’s softball, the Mariners split a double header with the UMaine Presque Isle Owls in non-conference action March 19 at the UMaine Dome on the campus of the University of Maine at Orono. The Owls won the first game 6-5 in extra innings while MMA won the nightcap 6-1 to earn the split.
In the first game, UMPI scored twice in the extra frame to break a 4-4 tie and went on the win 6-5.
In the second game, the Mariners’ Casey McCloskey picked up her second win of the season, throwing six strong innings. The sophomore hurler gave up just five hits while striking out nine batters. Mallery Stanley led the offense with two hits and three RBIs.
The Mariners were led by Brittany Hunt, who collected three hits and an RBI while Autumn Jones collected two hits and two RBIs. Erika Taylor got the start for MMA, giving up eight hits and four runs in four innings of work. McCloskey took the loss working four innings and giving up two runs.
