Aliens set to land at Stonington Opera House

Who are the aliens landing at the Stonington Opera House in February? Neither terrifying little green men nor the friendly, finger-pointing E.T.s you might expect.

Instead, Annie Baker’s Obie Award-winning drama The Aliens is a play about three young men who hang out in the alley behind a rural coffee shop, according to a press release. It is difficult to imagine anything of great consequence happening there. Yet it does.

The three young men are Jasper, a guitar-playing “street urchin” in his 30s who’s writing a novel; his best friend, K.J., a college dropout and songwriter; and the 17-year-old garbage-toting Evan, whom they befriend. The three are classic “misfits.” These are guys who can’t quite find the right thing to do despite their unique creative geniuses.

The play will run at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 2 through 11, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 5 and 12.

Director Peter Richards said he proposed the play in part because of how familiar its setting and characters will seem to rural Mainers. Opera House Arts’ artistic director, Judith Jerome, endorsed his idea.

Danny Jones will play Jasper. Jones’ credits include 12 Angry Men and Antigone Now with the Asolo Repertory Theater. Jones, an Alaska native, is a commercial fisherman.

Josh Bywater will play K.J. Bywater’s credits include television appearances on Grey’s Anatomy and As the World Turns.

Chris Bellant will play Evan. Bellant’s credits include a pilot for Fox Broadcasting Company, a number of short films and roles in several Shakespeare plays.

Director Richards has previously directed Brilliant Traces, Dying City, and Elizabeth Rex for OHA.

The full production schedule and tickets are available at www.operahousearts.org or by calling OHA at 367-2788. Fixed income, student, and group discounts are available.
