Brooksville

Winter wonderland in our backyard

Holbrook Island Sanctuary in Brooksville is sometimes overlooked or forgotten by area residents, but the sanctuary—which includes an island and several miles of trails on the mainland—is a treat all year long.

Tammy Bishop is the sanctuary’s steward, and is hard-pressed to choose her favorite trails. “I like all of them,” said Bishop.

None of the trails are groomed, said Bishop, but people do cross-country ski and snowshoe the trails. There are nine different trails to go on, but not all of them are easily accessible during the winter.

Bishop plows out three trailheads during the winter months: Back Shore Trail, Mountain Loop, and Summit Trail. The Fresh Pond Trail is also accessible. The day-use area where the picnic tables are set up is also plowed during the winter, though the outhouses aren’t shoveled out or stocked with toilet paper during the winter months.

“If you want a view, try the Summit Trail,” said Bishop, who warns of a steep section of the trail that might be problematic in winter. “Once you get to the top, there are great views.”

For winter trail travels, Bishop recommends the Fresh Pond Trail, which goes around the pond. “In the winter the ice is frozen, you can see all of the snags where the older cedar trees are sticking up,” she said.
