Land trusts see increased budgets, conserve 10 million acres

The first census of land trusts in five years found 10 million new acres conserved nationwide since 2005, including 134,840 acres here in Maine, according to a press release.

The National Land Trust Census, released by the Land Trust Alliance, shows that voluntarily protected land increased 27 percent between 2005 and 2010. In the same time period, the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, a major federal conservation program, added just over 500,000 acres and saw a 38 percent funding cut, the release continues. The census is online at www.lta.org/census.

A total of 1,796,387 acres have been conserved by 88 land trusts in Maine. Since 1985, Blue Hill Heritage Trust has protected over 5,800 acres, including over 2,000 acres of farmland.

For more information, contact Jen at 374-5118 or visit www.bluehillheritagetrust.org.

The Land Trust Alliance, a national conservation organization, is based in Washington, D.C.
