Fun for kids
Places and events for kids!

Blue Hill: The town park, at the end of Water St. off Main St. in Blue Hill, overlooks the harbor and is a great place to give the kids a chance to unwind on the playground; it’s also a lovely spot for a picnic or swim. Public library, corner of Main St. and Parker Point Rd. For more information, call 374-5515 or visit bluehill.lib.me.us.

At Homewood Farm in Blue Hill, you can work your way through a 10-acre corn maze with 11 stations. This year’s maze design is in keeping with a coastal theme, complete with a lobster boat named Mazey! Also at the farm are hayrides, farm animals, a farm stand, a pumpkin patch, and a trebuchet pumpkin toss. The maze is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Columbus Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On October 8 from 7 to 9 p.m., the farm will host a “full moon” maze walk. The maze will be haunted on October 28 and 29 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Brooklin: Friend Memorial Library, on Rte. 175 in the village of Brooklin.

Bucksport: A visit to Fort Knox is a great way to learn about the historic fort—and for a few nights in October, get spooked! This year’s Fright at the Fort will take place October 21, 22, 28 and 29 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The annual event, which raises money for the fort’s upkeep, is a must-see for those brave souls willing to step into the dark.

Castine: Witherle Library also has events for children (326-4375, witherle.lib.me.us).

On Monday, October 31, the library will host a Halloween party from 5 to 8 p.m. This will coincide with the annual Halloween Hayride leaving every half hour or so from town hall, which will host its own Halloween party for kids.

Deer Isle and Stonington: Enjoy the playground, ball field and basketball court at the Island Community Center, up the hill from the Opera House on your right and left. Info: islandcommunitycenter.net. The Stonington Public Library and the Chase Emerson Memorial Library in Deer Isle often have story readings or other events—check our community calendar at penobscotbaypress.com.

The community center will hold a pumpkin-carving event on Saturday, October 29. Stay tuned for more details!

Sedgwick: The Sedgwick-Brooklin Historical society will hold its 25th annual axe-throwing and log-sawing contests on Saturday, October 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. Fresh apples will be pressed using a century-plus old apple press while contestants throw axes and saw logs. Events for the whole family.
