by Jessica Brophy Those drivers who find it hard to keep fingers off of cell phones while driving will soon be paying a $100 fine each time they are caught. A bill signed into law on June 5 prohibiting texting while driving went into effect on Wednesday, September 28. No person can text while driving. Law enforcement can now stop a car because a driver is seen texting, according to a press release from the governor’s office. State senator Bill Diamond, D-Windham, sponsored the bill. “Texting is addictive, and doing it while you are driving is very dangerous. It is going to take a cultural change to break people, especially young people, of the habit,” said Diamond in the governor’s press release. There are 33 other states that have banned texting while driving, according to the Insurance Institute for Highways Safety Web site. Using a hand-held cell phone for conversation is still legal in Maine for those who have a license and are over the age of 18. Learner’s permit drivers, licensed drivers under the age of 18, and drivers who received their license less than 180 days ago cannot use a cell phone in any capacity while driving. |
